Make it easy for an employer to see what you can bring. This checklist helps you choose relevant experience, check the facts and send a résumé that represents you with confidence.
Keep a factual master record
Store the correct spelling of your name, current contact details, employment dates, qualifications and relevant licences. Mark anything you still need to confirm. A qualification in progress should be described that way.
Keep useful examples of work, study and volunteering. Note the situation, your own action and the result. If a number is important, make sure you can explain where it came from. Do not add a percentage or achievement simply because it sounds persuasive.
Select evidence for the specific role
Read the advertisement and position description before editing. Identify the main duties and essential requirements. Then choose the experience that helps explain your suitability.
Use the employer’s terminology when it accurately describes your work. Avoid copying a requirement into the résumé as though it were an experience you already possess. A requirement you do not meet remains a gap to understand.
For a first application, the no-experience guide shows how to describe unpaid experience clearly. Our Bendigo search plan helps you organise the role and its requested documents.
Make the document easy to use
Use readable headings, consistent dates and a sensible order. Check that contact details can be selected as text. A straightforward layout can make review easier, but no layout guarantees acceptance by every recruitment system.
Save the requested file format. Open the PDF or Word document after exporting. Look for clipped text, missing pages, broken links, misplaced headings and an old employer name left in the letter.
Review the package before sending
Compare the résumé, letter and screening answers. Confirm that they describe the same history and availability. Check the exact role and destination once more.
Keep the final version and receipt together. If you later correct a factual error, record what changed so the next package uses the corrected information.
