Annual leave, personal and carer’s leave, parental leave and long service leave have different rules. Start with your employment basis and the reason for the absence. A casual and a permanent role may have different paid-leave arrangements.

- Check your balance and the dates you need.
- Read the notice and evidence requirements for the leave type.
- Ask how a public holiday during the period will be treated.
- Keep the request and the response in writing.

Use Fair Work’s calculator as an estimate with the correct employment details. For long service leave in Victoria, first check which scheme applies; a state rule, award, agreement or industry scheme may need to be considered.
